Week #30: April 13th - 17th
What a rainy, grey week we’ve had, but the temps were warmer so that was great! And, we ended it on a sunny day today, wasn't it glorious?! Loved it!
I do want to say a big thank you to all the parents who sent their children with the proper rain gear because of you, we were able to head outside for recess every single day and enjoy some fresh air (even if it was a little drizzly).
A lot of kids did such a good job staying out of the major puddles and staying dry(ish), haha.
EARTH WEEK INITIATIVES:
During lunch, classrooms are encouraged to turn off the lights to help save energy and bring awareness to how small actions can make a difference.
Students are encouraged to bring lunches with reusable containers so that little to no garbage is created. Also, take all items (wrappers, peels, cores) that were brought to school in their lunch back home (boomerang).
Students and staff are encouraged to wear green and blue to celebrate Earth Day and show support for protecting our planet.
Students are encouraged to walk, bike, scooter, or roll to school if possible to minimize their carbon footprint.
As many of you can understand, selecting a team is very difficult. There were so many talented, dedicated players who showed heart and effort during our tryouts. I wish I could include everyone, but unfortunately, space is limited.
My goal is to develop young athletes and have a love for the game.
Although the team roster has been finalized, I want to extend an open invitation to all junior boys in grades 4 - 6 to continue being part of our volleyball community.
π You’re welcome to join:
✔️ Friday Morning Volleyball Clinics at 8:15am
✔️ Friendly scrimmages (such as matchups against the junior girls team)
This is a great way to continue learning, growing, and most importantly having fun while playing the game!
To those who didn’t make the final roster this time, please know how proud I am of your hard work and courage. Keep practicing & keep playing. π
COACH ALLAN:
To Mr. Colquhoun (a.k.a. Coach Allan!)
From all of us athletes and coaches alike, THANK YOU for volunteering your time to run your volleyball clinics with our student athletes π
π₯ Your drills? Next-level.
π― Your games? Super fun and full of purpose.
π§ Your knowledge? Endless!
π Your care and mentorship? Truly inspiring.
You brought the perfect mix of fun, focus, and fierce volleyball wisdom to every session, and the boys are loving it!
You're officially an honourary member of the Junior Boys Volleyball family now and always. π
GRAMMAR RULE #12:
A verb tells what is happening to the noun. Verbs are the action or state of being in a sentence, they let us know what the subject (noun) is doing, being, or experiencing.
1. Action Verbs
These verbs show action, something the noun is doing.
Examples:
The dog runs fast. ππ¨
She paints beautiful pictures. π¨
They jump over the fence. π€Έ
πͺ Tip: If you can act it out, it’s an action verb!
π Your turn!
Read these sentences with a parent. Can they find the action verb? Circle or say it out loud!
The cat climbs the tree. ππ³
He throws the ball. ⚾️
They dance to the music. πΆ
2. Linking Verbs
These verbs connect the noun to more information about it. They don’t show action, they show a state of being or condition.
Examples:
She is a teacher. π
The soup smells delicious. π²
The flowers are bright yellow. πΌ
πͺ Tip: Linking verbs describe or rename the noun!
π Your turn!
Read with a parent and find the linking verb!
The sky is blue today. ☁️π
The lemonade tastes sweet. π
He was tired after the game. π
3. Helping Verbs
Helping verbs help the main verb show tense, possibility, or necessity. Helping verbs work as a team with the main verb!
Examples:
She is running to school. π♀️
They have finished their work. ✅
He will bake a cake. π
πͺ Tip: Helping verbs come before the main verb!
π Your turn!
Find the helping verb with your parent!
We are going to the park. π³
She will bring snacks. ππͺ
They have cleaned their room. π§Ή
⭐ Bonus Challenge:
With a parent, make up 1 sentence for each kind of verb! Write them down or say them out loud.

MATH - CODING TASKS:
This week in math, we continued our coding skills and had a lot of fun doing it!
Ask your child to show you their work on Google Classroom, activities like Lobster Trap, Ride the Rocket, and Ripley’s Space Adventure.
Here are a few things they’ve been learning to explain:
- Concurrent Events: things happening at the same time (like walking and talking!)
- Sequence Events: one thing happening at a time
- Repeating Events: programming the computer to loop (repeat) an action over and over again
The students are really enjoying these challenges and are getting great at it!
Students are encouraged to keep practicing at home. I have posted their coding tasks in Google Classroom for you all to access, have your child show you.
And now, please take a look at some photos below to see the kids coding in action :)
MICAH:
This week, we had our second mathlete achieve a certificate for a full Mathalon for completing their missions on KnowledgeHook.
Way to go Micah! Your dedication to working on math concepts is inspiring and I appreciate your efforts π
You are a star!
FIELD TRIP FUN:
Our trip to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was a wonderful and meaningful experience for our class.
We even enjoyed the bus ride as we got to socialize with our friends and enjoy the nice views heading to Midland π²
Students had the opportunity to learn about Indigenous ways of life, with a focus on the Wendat and Huron peoples.
They explored a longhouse, created dolls using corn husks, and planted seeds to take home and grow hands-on experiences that brought their learning to life.
The day was both informative and reflective, reminding us of the importance of reconciliation. By learning about our shared history, we continue to build understanding and respect for Canada’s First Peoples.
A big thank you to Micah, Charlotte, and Rachel’s moms for volunteering their time, energy, and positive energy with us on Thursday.
Your support in guiding activities, handing out materials, and helping keep the children safe was truly appreciated!
I am so proud of my students for their respectful behaviour and for representing our school community so well. Way to go boys and girls :)
MAGIC OF CHILDREN IN THE ARTS:
A couple of months ago, your child had an in-class art workshop presented by Magic of Children in the Arts.
Shandelle came in and provided a lesson, art materials, and inspiration for your child to create their own flower pot masterpiece :)
Please know, this piece will be brought home later this school year.
The Magic of Children in the Arts is a non-profit organization that provides art education for children in our community through Saturday classes at the Collingwood Library and in school workshops, like the one that your child has experienced.
This program provides free art classes for all grade 3, 6 and 8 students at area schools, due to the generous support of sponsors and donors, how amazing!
Every year, MAGIC hosts an Art Show at the Collingwood Public Library and great news, your child's work, along with the works of almost 2,000 other local children will be included!
This year the Art Show will be displayed from May 1st through to June 10th. Check out the flyer below. ππΎ
Mark your calendars. π¨
Please also note that the Annual Art Show Celebration is taking place on Saturday, May 2nd! It will be featuring games, entertainment, food, and most importantly, your child's art on full display!
Hope you're able to check this special event out :) Let's keep celebrating Art education!
MEDITATION MONDAYS:
Meditation Mondays have been such a calm and positive way to start the school week. It has been really lovely to see a small group of students coming in early and choosing to join in this quiet time.
We take a few moments to slow down, breathe, and set a positive intention for the week ahead. It’s a simple routine, but it helps us feel more settled, focused, and ready to learn.
A big thank you to all the family members who have been bringing their children in early so they can take part in meditating in my portable, your support means a lot!
Please note, I have two more guided meditation sessions coming up on Monday, April 20th & Monday, April 27th at 8:45-9:15am. If your child’s interested in joining, I’d love to see them there. π§♀️ π π§♂️
MINDFULNESS:
Please take a moment to tune into the captivating short film below by Conservation International and be inspired to join a powerful movement to give nature a voice. π±
The time is now. It’s up to us to:
πΉ PROTECT our planet.
πΉ RESTORE what has been lost.
πΉ FUNDING to support the well-being of Mother Earth, our greatest and most generous provider.
Let this film be a call to action:
π LISTEN to the voice of nature
πͺ ACT with urgency
π€ UNITE for climate change
Together, we can make a difference.π
GROWTH MINDSET:
Thank you to Norah for this week's mindset message!
"Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others, cannot keep it from themselves." - Norah
What does this mean?
This quote means that when you are kind, helpful, and positive to other people, that good feeling doesn’t just stay with them, it comes back to you too.
It’s like sharing “sunshine” with others. When you make someone smile, help a friend, or say something kind, you also start to feel happier inside :)
So, the more kindness and positivity we give to others, the more you will feel it in your own heart too π©·
With love, grace, and gratitude,
Ms. Gill
